Happy Workers Day!

Load ShedToday is Workers’ Day in South Africa – a public holiday that has its origins internationally, within the historical struggles of workers and their trade unions.

The day celebrates the rights of workers, and recognises their struggle for fair working conditions and employment standards. It has been a holiday since 1994, and has ties to the International Workers’ Day celebrations enjoyed in many other countries.

In pre-1994 South Africa, the demand for the annual observance of the day as a public holiday became a rallying point for workers and their trade unions, and was one of a number of significant dates to symbolise and mobilise resistance to the apartheid government and its racial policies.

While it is still an important day for workers in particular, it’s a chance for all South Africans to have a day to themselves, and for those who do work, to enjoy a well-deserved break.

A Special Valentines Day at Sostanza

Sostanza Bakery and Coffee Shop was2833 born in 2006 in the Old Bakery Building in Lakeside. The locals excitedly came and informed us of days gone by, when one could smell the fresh bread being baked in the early morning.

Although there have been two owners since it started, Sostanza has always lived up to its name. So what does the name mean – direct translation means nourishing, substantial, and abundant. In Italy, food is a celebration of life.

IMG_0504 (1)A beautiful experience of food, of family, friends and warm companionship, laughter and fun. Winnie Sass from Chas Everitt Tokai has been one of our valued regular customers for many years. We have enjoyed many chats with her, ranging from houses for sale to motor bikes and rallies. This year Winnie made our Valentines day so special by sponsoring 50 red and white helium balloons, with her card attached, for our customers to take. What a wonderful atmosphere was added to our décor. Thank you so much Winnie. We are trusting for a double blessing of sales for each balloon.

Lovingly the Management and Staff of Sostanza.

New Load Shedding App

New Load Shedding App

load shedding appNo more confusing PDFs, no more outdated schedules that are almost as frustrating as the power outages themselves – News24 has developed a nifty app that allows you to check exactly when your neighbourhood will be hit by load shedding.

The free web application, Grid Watch allows users to type in their suburb name, and will then churn out an easy-to-understand schedule that shows when your area is set for a power outage, depending on what schedule (Schedule 1, 2, 3A, 3B) Eskom is operating on at the time.

The best part? The app will show you schedules for the next two weeks.

The news site reportedly has plans to develop the app for Android and iOS, so you can check it out on the go.

New Load Shedding Schedule

New Load Shedding Schedule

The new schedules below are designed around the days of the month and reflect Eskom’s decision to implement loadshedding nationally on a regular basis and over weekends. They replace the previous schedules, which were designed around days of the week and were applicable for occasional loadshedding during peak demand times.

Loadshedding stages depend on the extent of the shortage of generation capacity to meet the country’s electricity demand, with stage 1 being the least serious, and stage 3b being the most serious.

Loadshedding outages generally last for about 2,5 hours, with one area being affected at a time during stage 1 and four areas being affected at a time during stage 3b.

Precautions to avoid damage to appliances:

  • load-shedingHave backup batteries for fences and gates to ensure electric fencing and gates still work during a blackout. It is imperative that backup batteries are installed and maintained;
  • Install surge protectors which help to stop the massive sudden flow of energy into household appliances and electronics;
  • Unplug appliances: In the event that the power goes out, it is a good idea to unplug any appliance or electronic device that may be vulnerable to the power surges when the electricity comes back on.
